- Previously, access required a $99-per-year Apple Developer program subscription. However, starting last year, anyone with a free Apple Developer account can access the beta.
Public Beta:
- On July 16, 2024, Apple released the first iOS 18 public beta.
- It’s designed to be more stable than the developer beta and is open to anyone who signs up for the Apple Beta Software program.
Installing the Beta: Proceed with Caution
While exciting, installing the beta versions comes with caveats:
- Compatibility Issues: Not all third-party apps may work.
- Battery Life: It may not be optimized yet.
- Service Restrictions: Apple won’t service devices running beta software. If you need a repair, you must revert to the latest public release of iOS 17.

With the iPhone 16 announcement anticipated in early September, iOS 18 should launch around September 16-23, just before the iPhone 16 hits the market.
Device Compatibility and Backup Advice
iOS 18 will be available for iPhone models as far back as the iPhone XS. However, the Apple Intelligence features will only be available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max due to hardware requirements.
