Pro Max-Level Zoom Camera in a Smaller Package
This year’s iPhone 16 Pro is tipped to become the first of Apple’s smaller smartphones to receive a powerful 5x telephoto camera, matching the capability found in the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this significant upgrade will bring Apple’s advanced zoom technology to the regular iPhone 16 Pro this September.
Future Camera Enhancements: A Glimpse into the iPhone 17 and Beyond
However, the excitement doesn’t stop there. Kuo’s report reveals even more extensive camera upgrades coming to future iPhone flagships, starting with next year’s iPhone 17 range and extending as far ahead as the iPhone 19 range in 2027.
iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro: A Quantum Leap in Camera Quality
Starting with the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple’s flagship is predicted to gain a new 48-megapixel tetraprism-based camera featuring a larger 1/2.6-inch sensor, an upgrade from the 1/3.1-inch sensor in the iPhone 16 Pro series. The larger sensor will boost the camera’s light-gathering capability by around 40%, reducing graininess and improving low-light performance.
The upgrade from 12 to 48 megapixels will enhance detail and digital zoom capabilities, potentially allowing 8K video at 5x optical zoom, a feature already available on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra.
It’s not yet confirmed whether the new 48-megapixel tetraprism camera will appear in both iPhone 17 Pro models or only the larger iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, Kuo expects this camera to be available on both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in 2026.
iPhone 19 Pro: Pushing the Boundaries of Zoom
Kuo anticipates an even bigger leap in camera performance with the iPhone 19 Pro range, focusing on increased optical zoom. The report speculates that achieving a longer zoom range might require new, more complex prism geometry that reflects light multiple times internally. While more complex optics can potentially introduce distortions and reduce light transmission, Apple’s expertise in mitigating these issues will be crucial.
Improved long-range zoom performance would position Apple to effectively challenge Samsung, which recently reduced its maximum optical telephoto from 10x to 5x in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Notably, Dxomark has already highlighted the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s superior long-range zoom performance in low-light situations compared to the Samsung flagship. With advancements in optical zoom, Apple could further assert its dominance in both low-light and brightly lit scenarios, potentially overtaking Samsung in one of its traditionally strong areas.
Conclusion: The Future of iPhone Cameras
The upcoming camera upgrades across the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro, and beyond signify Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of smartphone photography. As smaller iPhones gain powerful zoom capabilities and future models see even greater enhancements, Apple fans can look forward to a future where their smartphones rival dedicated cameras in terms of performance and versatility.
